“Fabulous Forgeries 2012″ through February 4th at the Artist Gallery. Catch it if you can.

I’ve lived in the Hampton Roads area since 1994 and active in the artist community for about 2 years. For some unknown reason I had never been to The Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach.

What a wonderfully alive gallery full of local home grown art and artists down near the oceanfront at 608 Norfolk Avenue (9th).  The Artists Gallery is a cooperative that started in 1988 on Pacific and 24th Street and is managed by the efforts of  the exhibiting artists.

When I walked in I was warmly greeted by exhibiting artist Frances Cobb and Constance Fahey Director and one of the resident artists.  Both local painters and friendly representatives of our wonderful town.  (My Hampton Roads town that is.)

I knew that I had missed the opening reception for the “Fabulous Forgeries”  but I was determined to see the exhibition and the gallery I had never been to before, while I was in the area.  Wow… I was amazed when I walked in the door. The exhibition started in the front gallery on the left hand wall and it felt like I had walked into a museum with some of my favorite artists all in a row. Kahlo, Cassatt, Vermeer, Modigliani and Caravaggio all shared the same wall space.

The Freida Kahlo self portrait,  chosen the best in show, was painted by Kay Hofler and was one of my favorite Kahlos. What a  difficult task it must have been to to judge this show with so many phenomenal forgeries entered. Mary Cassett’s Young Girls by Pam Watkins, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring by Danielle Eckhardt, Caragaggio’s Christ at the Column by Ken Garcia Olaes and Modigliani’s Jeanne Hebuterne by Terry Whittaker to name a few.

Go to see the show and go to meet some of the resident artists.  What you will see is the tip of the iceburg of great art that our community creates.  I have decided that I no longer have to shop anywhere but our local galleries for gifts that will be appreciated and loved by generations.

The next exhibit at The Artists Gallery is “Be There, and Be Square” and the opening reception is Friday, February 10th from 6:30-8:30pm. Hope to see you there!

The Girl with the Pearl Earring by Vermeer was hands down the best of the fabulous forgeries!
